Questions

Before your first visit

01

Do I need surgery for low back pain?

Most people don't. The majority of low back pain improves with non-surgical care such as activity changes, physical therapy, and targeted injections aimed at the exact area causing the pain. Dr. Sean McMillan, DO (a doctor of osteopathic medicine), starts by identifying which structure, a disc, a facet joint, or a nerve root, is generating the pain before recommending any treatment. Surgery is considered only after these options have been tried and have not worked.

02

Can sciatica get better without surgery?

Yes, in most cases. Sciatica is pain that travels down the leg when a nerve root in the low back becomes irritated or compressed. Dr. McMillan treats sciatica along with the related condition cervical radiculopathy, which is nerve irritation in the neck, using image-guided treatment aimed at the specific nerve involved, and many patients improve without an operation.

03

What does an epidural steroid injection treat?

It calms inflammation around a specific spinal nerve root. An epidural steroid injection places medicine into the space around the spinal nerves to reduce the swelling that causes radiating pain, such as sciatica or cervical radiculopathy. Dr. McMillan performs targeted steroid injections, including traditional steroid injections and long acting steroid injections, as part of this image-guided approach to pain that starts in the spine.

04

Does Dr. McMillan treat sports injuries?

Yes. Sports medicine is one of Dr. McMillan's primary clinical focus areas, and he completed fellowship training in arthroscopic sports medicine of the shoulder, hip, knee, and elbow at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester. He performs arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, hip, and knee, a technique that uses a small camera to diagnose and treat joint injuries. He also performs meniscal repair, a procedure that repairs torn cartilage in the knee that is common in sports injuries.

05

Is Dr. McMillan accepting new patients?

Yes, Dr. McMillan is accepting new patients. Many patients are referred by another physician, reflecting the practice's close work with referring doctors in Burlington Township, New Jersey.
