Questions
Questions patients ask
Do I need a referral to see Dr. McMillan?+
No, a referral is not required to schedule a visit. Many patients come to Dr. McMillan after another doctor suggests an orthopedic evaluation, but you can also schedule directly with the office. If you do have a referral, bring the paperwork and any imaging, such as X-rays or an MRI, to your first visit so the team has the full picture.
Is Dr. McMillan accepting new patients?+
Accepting new patients. Dr. Sean McMillan Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in Burlington Township, New Jersey, is currently open to new patients.
What is Dr. McMillan's training background?+
Dr. McMillan is a doctor of osteopathic medicine (DO) who completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the Peninsula Hospital Consortium, North Shore Long Island Jewish Health Systems, in Long Island, New York. He then completed fellowship training in arthroscopic sports medicine at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester, a program focused on the shoulders, hips, knees, and elbows. This training supports his focus on sports medicine along with neck and back conditions such as sciatica and cervical radiculopathy, pain or numbness that travels from a pinched nerve in the neck.
What conditions and injuries does Dr. McMillan treat?+
Dr. McMillan treats a range of orthopedic conditions, including muscle injuries and avulsions (injuries where a tendon or ligament pulls away from the bone), arthritis of the hip, hip and thigh muscle strains and contusions, snapping hip (a hip that catches, pops, or snaps during movement), lateral ankle instability, and osteoarthritis, the wear-and-tear form of joint arthritis. His practice also focuses on low back pain, neck pain, and sciatica, pain that radiates along the sciatic nerve from the lower back into the leg.
Will I need surgery for back or neck pain?+
Most people don't. Dr. McMillan's approach starts with identifying exactly which structure in the spine is generating the pain, then treating that structure directly, often with nonsurgical options such as targeted steroid injections, before surgery is ever discussed. Surgery is typically considered only after nonsurgical treatment hasn't provided enough relief.
Does Dr. McMillan treat sports injuries?+
Yes. Sports medicine, including arthroscopy of the shoulder, hip, and knee, a procedure that uses a small camera and instruments to examine and treat the inside of a joint, is one of Dr. McMillan's primary areas of focus. He performs procedures such as arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, hip, and knee, hip arthroscopy, and meniscal repair, a procedure to repair torn cartilage in the knee.
What should I bring to my first appointment?+

Will my insurance be accepted?+
